What is Travertine? Turkish Travertine

Chemical sedimentary rocks consisting of calcium carbonate, which are formed as a result of the collapse of calcium carbonate in underground and cave waters under certain conditions, are called Travertine. It has a porous (spongy appearance) structure when the gas formed during its formation comes out. It is easily distinguished from other relatives (marble, granite) by its spongy appearance.


Travertine, which is known by many different names in the natural stone sector and in general terms and has passed from French to Turkish, is also known by names such as hollow calcareous sedimentary rock, sponge-like limestone sediment, pamuktas, siliceous sediment, cotton stone, calcareous sediment, travertine. Travertine stone is extracted from january mines and processed in factories and obtained in blocks by sizing. This natural stone, which is mainly in coffee tone and similar color transitions, has varieties in white, gold, tan, dark rusty red tones and many other colors and shades.


Physical and Chemical Properties of Turkish Travertine Stone


Travertine stone, the use of which dates back to very ancient times, finds a wide place in many fields and designs with its very solid and durable structure. Although its strength is weaker than granite and marble, it is often used for decorative purposes in almost many buildings and facade coatings. Although it looks like a weak stone with its porous structure, it can withstand an average pressure of up to 250-750 kg/cm2. Despite this negative feature of this stone, which has a perforated and veined structure, it is indispensable for interior architecture due to its non-slip structure. It can be affected by heavy chemicals and all acidic products, its natural structure and appearance may deteriorate. Travertine, which can be obtained in many colors and shades, is very preferred especially on floors, pool sides, garden, kitchen and bathroom due to its non-slip feature. Due to its light weight, Travertine Stone, which is also very popular in exterior and interior wall coverings, has a structure that accepts chemicals in polishing and similar applications. This gemstone, which is also economically viable, does not threaten human and animal health with its antibacterial property.


Long lasting and able to face environmental conditions known to be a lot Travertine, and physical factors being affected by the external environment with the natural stones, artificial stones and other covering, compared with a more long-lasting coating and flooring decoration materials. Another feature is that the travertine does not need maintenance. All that needs to be done for maintenance is to wash the stones outdoors, and indoors it is enough to just take the dust off it.

  • When water enters the structure, its structure deteriorates and deformations occur over time in case of any freezing or when it is used in areas with high day-night temperatures.

  • Travertine can not show high resistance to substances such as citric acid, vinegar, alcohol.

Travertine stone, which we saw in ancient times, especially in buildings and monuments of the Roman period, today also finds a place in many projects with its attractive appearance, economical price and use advantage suitable for almost any design and with its anti-slip feature.
